Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Average cost per Square Foot for a container home? Although cost for a container home can vary, we usually quote our customers $100 per square foot, just to give a ballpark-estimate. But this estimate can go up or down, depending on what is done to the shipping container home. We can build you a home with just the basics, or fully design and install everything you need.
What is the cost of shipping a container home? The cost of shipping a container home is $150, locally (near the area of Kingsbury, Texas) or $3.50 per mile.
Are there any Limitations to Shipping Container home building, or design? There aren't many limitations to shipping container design and building. If you are to cross stack them, they will need reinforcement agreed upon by a structural engineer. - If you are to stack modified shipping containers, one can stack them a maximum of 8 containers high. Also, seeking council within city limits is a must; your house and build-site will need to comply with city codes.
What kind of insulation do you use? We typically use R-19 Batt insulation, and have used Closed Cell Blown insulation. Choosing insulation is an aspect of your budget we will try to meet. Along with this insulation, we spray the outside of the container with a thick coat of Thermal Paint Additive; this prevents the formation of condensation on the Corten steel walls.
Are the floors dangerous, being that it has preservatives and pesticides on it? Very long, close exposure to this wood can be cause for concern, especially if one was to try and remove it or cut it without proper PPE. Other than that, NO; we spray these 1 1/8" plywood floors with the most recommended vapor seal barriers to prevent contact with these chemicals. We've also had customers spray on vapor seals, put a permanent vapor seal mat over the entire floor, and then put another layer of flooring (i.e. hardwood, tile, ect.)
Can 2 containers be put together, side-by-side? Yes.
Is rust an issue with this type of construction? We won't buy a Shipping Container with too much rust on it. That would mean the container is low grade and nearing the end of its usefulness. We do buy shipping containers with rust on them, but we grind away the rust, and spot-weld any problem areas. If we intend to make a house out of a shipping container, we make sure that rust will not be a problem.
Can I get a traditional loan for these structures or are nontraditional loans required due to the type of construction? If you can get a loan to cover the cost of your house, that is fantastic and congratulations; unfortunately as of now, we are close, but we haven't found a company that will finance these types of houses, yet (This website will be updated once we find a company that will finance). There are ways to go about getting loans, depending on your needs, circumstances, financial situation, and wording: (e.g. Referring to these dwellings as an office, instead of a home, might just get you accepted). We recommend calling Drew about this one.
How much does a used/new shipping container alone cost? You'll have to contact us for pricing. Prices are ever-changing so we can keep up with competition.
